Let's go forward and first explore the two major ways search engines get their listings; then you will see how search engine optimization can especially help with crawler-based search engines.

Some search engines support inspection of files that are stored in a compressed or encrypted file format. When working with a compressed format, the indexer first decompresses the document; this step may result in one or more files, each of which must be indexed separately. Commonly supported compressed file formats include:

Everyone wants those good listings. Unfortunately, many Web sites appear poorly in search engine rankings or may not be listed at all because they fail to consider how search engines work.

The fastest browsers at starting are the less commonly used Konqueror 3.2 (only on KDE), Camino 0.8 and iCab 2, with Konqueror by far the fastest at a warm start. However, it has one of the slowest script implementations of all the major browsers on Linux, and even though its cache handling is a bit faster on Gnome, its slow startup time on Gnome outweighs the benefit of better caching. The 3.5.3 release was supposed to have performance improvements, but while the startup time has been reduced a little, and CSS is a little faster, this has been at the expense of its history handling and JavaScript engine, which are now even slower than before. The only browsers that are slower at scripts are Opera 6 and Mozilla 1.0, both of which are old releases that have long since been replaced with much faster versions. Camino 1.0 has adopted a newer version of the engine, and now its startup time is much closer to those of the other Gecko browsers (Firefox and Mozilla), so its main advantage has been lost.

• Supply alt text when using images as links - If you do decide to use an image as a link,
filling out its alt text helps Google understand more about the page you're linking to. Imagine
that you're writing anchor text for a text link.
Avoid:
• writing excessively long alt text that would be considered spammy
• using only image links for your site's navigation
• Store images in a directory of their own - Instead of having image files spread out in
numerous directories and subdirectories across your domain, consider consolidating your
images into a single directory (e.g. brandonsbaseballcards.com/images/). This simplifies the
path to your images.

JumpStation (released in December 1993) used a web robot to find web pages and to build its index, and used a web form as the interface to its query program. It was thus the first WWW resource-discovery tool to combine the three essential features of a web search engine (crawling, indexing, and searching) as described below. Because of the limited resources available on the platform on which it ran, its indexing and hence searching were limited to the titles and headings found in the web pages the crawler encountered.
